Fall Newsletter

Dear Folks.

Fall is just around the corner and that is always exciting to me because my birthday is in October. Many people dread the fall because winter follows. Enjoy the fall and use it to prevent winter problems. It is very difficult today to deal with the cost of living and the stress that we live with. You can ‘handle’ daily stress, if you support your health. You really are what you put in your mouth and in your head. Curl up with a good book and a cup of tea and take those supplements.

We have less sun in the winter and most of us do not spend time in the sun due to fear of skin cancer. It’s okay to be cautious but remember that the latest research on Vitamin D proves that a slight deficiency in this vitamin can compromise your immune system. Vitamin D reduces the risk of some cancers, such as prostate and breast cancer. Even chronic pain has been linked to low vitamin D levels. It is necessary to take at least 800 IU daily to reduce the risk of fractures.

There are some advantages to being a sun worshipper, if you don’t overdue it. Twenty minutes a day would be very beneficial. Walking the dog or gardening or sitting on a park bench. I was reading Dr. David Williams newsletter and he talked about the use of “heliotherapy” in the TB sanitariums last century. It brought back the memory of my mother calling me a “Heliotrope.” I was a sun worshipper. I didn’t know what a “heliotrope” was and later found out it had much folklore connected to it. The herb Valerian is also called Heliotrope. This plant was a mortal woman long, long ago. She angered the Goddesses by worshipping the Sun God, Apollo. She followed him everywhere. To put an end to her sun worshipping they turned her into the herb, valerian. Planted her feet firmly in the ground so she could not follow Apollo all day. If you have Valerian in your herb garden, watch the flower. She turns her flowery head to follow the sun until he sets. She then turns to face the east to wait for his return. The end.
If your skin is very dark you won’t benefit as much from the sun, so be sure to take your vitamin D. I know we are coming into the winter months so taking vitamin D is even more important. I take 2000 IU a day. Your body does store Vitamin D; it uses up what it has stored by mid-winter. You would have to take at least 40,000 IU daily for months to develop any sign of toxicity. In addition to bone health, Vitamin D contributes to immune system health and reduces the risk of several cancers.

This has been an exciting time for us because we have just published the revised and updated “Herb Talk” book. It is more than 100 ailments that have been updated and expanded. I’ve added new supplements to the “Supplement Section” and added to the “Individual Herb” section. If you have an “Herb Talk” book, you know how easy it is to use and share. It is a three ring binder that opens flat. I chose this type of binder so that you could easily take pages out and make copies for a friend. We have also written new updates for those of you that already have this book. Those are free to you for the asking. This book does grow. It has been awhile since many of you have asked for updates. Let us know what the date is at the bottom of your pages and we will send you the updates that you are missing. This addition has over three hundred pages, packed full of great information. I’m already working on the next up dates.

With all my talk about joint and bone health, let’s all keep our “joints jumping”!! With the help of our special, you can save money on joint health.
